Da Yang is currently conducting at Bukit Batok Chinese Orchestra.

Da Yang was first introduced to Chinese Orchestra when he joined Chua Chu Kang Secondary School Chinese Orchestra as an erhu player, under the tutelage of Mr Mike Chiang. He joined the Bukit Batok Chinese Orchestra in 2001 and was orchestra’s concertmaster from 2002-2004. Under the then management led by Mr Lee Heng Quee, Da Yang joined the orchestra in many of their community performances, as well as the orchestra’s music exchange to Malaysia in 2003 and their public concert in 2004 held in the Victoria School’s auditorium. He has then since been active in the local Chinese Orchestra scene, often guest playing in many Chinese Orchestras public performances.

Da Yang’s first experience in conducting comes when he was appointed as the student conductor for Hwa Chong Junior College Chinese Orchestra in 2004 where he received the guidance from Dr Wei Yan Ming and Mr Lum Yan Sing on orchestral conducting.

In 2014, Da Yang was selected as one of the three participants in the Conducting Masterclass on Chinese Music Conducting organised by Singapore’s National Arts Council, Esplanade - Theatres by the Bay, Singapore Chinese Music Federation and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and was taught by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Maestro Yan Huichang. During the masterclass, Da Yang was further exposed to the the art of conducting from Maestro Yan. In 2015, Da Yang was again selected to join the conducting workshop organised by Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Under the tutelage of Maestro Tsung Yeh, Da Yang was given the opportunity to conduct the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.

Da Yang returned to Bukit Batok Chinese Orchestra, then under the baton of Mr Chew Keng How, in 2012 and made his conducting and arrangement debut with the orchestra in their concert held in SOTA concert hall in 2014. 

Da Yang was also the Assistant Conductor of the West Coast Community Club Senior Citizens Chinese Orchestra from 2008-2010. During the two years as their assistant conductor, he has led the orchestra in numerous community performances, including a combined Wushu meet organised by the Community Club where the orchestra was part of the accompaniment for the Wushu players. 

Da Yang also successfully organized and co-conducted a full length concert with the Chua Chu Kang Secondary School Alumni Chinese Orchestra in 2013 and the performance was well received by both the audience and the school’s administration.

Da Yang has also lead Bukit Batok Chinese Orchestra in numerous performances within the community, including a combined western and chinese orchestra celebrating the 50th anniversary of bilateral ties between Singapore and South Korea.
