Dr Chen Jer-Ming, senior lecturer and acoustician from Singapore University of Technology and Design, was invited to give a lecture on the science of voice. The class was also treated to a special performance on throat singing by Dr Chen.
The course concluded with a sound walk around the campus, where the class was invited to appreciate how sound changes in different environment. The class was invited to bring their own instruments to appreciate in real-time how changes from both listener's and player's point of view.
How could one learn about sound without experiencing it (and lots of it)? 😜
Proud papa moment when the class was able to consolidate everything they have learnt into exploration of topics of their interest. In this pilot run of the course, students explore a variety of topics: comparative studies of beatboxing and drum set, exploring the sound of different pianos, investigating how speed of speech affects memory retention, and acoustics of the room within the residential block.
